Music Hall Artist Series presents Brian Downen, tenor with Blake Riley

Event Description:

The University of West Florida Department of Music will present Tenor Brian Downen as part of the Music Hall Artist Series on Monday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Hall at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82, on the Pensacola campus.

Downen has sung leading roles in more than 70 productions for opera houses located in the U.S. and abroad. He made his debut with the Metropolitan Opera in 2015 in Donizetti’s “Roberto Devereux” and has since returned in the roles of Monsieur Triquet in “Eugene Onegin,” Dance Master in “Manon Lescaut” (cover) and the four servants in “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.” (cover). Other recent engagements include the New York City premiere of “Piramo e Tisbe” by Hasse with Little Opera Theater of New York; the U.S. premiere of Francesco Cavalli’s opera “Veremonda la mazzone di Aragona” with the Spoleto Festival USA.

Downen is known for his portrayals of the leading tenor roles in bel canto operas including “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” “La Cenerentola,” “L’Italiana in Algeri,” “Don Giovanni,” “Die Zauberflöte” and “Die Entführung aus dem Sarail.” In the 2018-19 season, Downen performed “Messiah” with the El Paso Choral Society and Tamino in “Die Zauberflöte” with El Paso Opera. He also sings in recitals with The Opera Company of Middlebury in Vermont.

He will also portray General Sir Phillip Wingrave in the New York City premiere of Benjamin Britten’s opera “Owen Wingrave” for Little Opera Theater of New York. Downen is an assistant professor of voice at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Downen will present a program including works by Britten, Beethoven, Strauss, Schumann and more. Blake Riley, assistant professor and director of collaborative piano at UWF, will accompany for the concert.

Ticket prices are $18 for adults, $14 for seniors and military, $12 for UWF faculty and staff and non-UWF students and $7 for high school students. UWF students get in free with a valid Nautilus card. For more information or to reserve tickets, please contact the CFPA Box Office at 850.857.6285.
