7:30 PM - 9:00 PM Music Hall Artist Series presents Sarojini Sundaresan and Leela Rao
Our first Music Hall Artist Series Concert will focus on Classical Carnatic Music. Carnatic music has a rich tradition and is one of the gems of world music. The musical style was developed in the southern part of the subcontinent of India during the late 15th and early 16th Century and relies upon the Teacher-Disciple training system. Vocalist Sarojini Sundaresan will be performing with vocal support from Leela Rao and Srinidhi Rao. They will be joined by Sasidhar Madugula, violin, and Vikram Vasudevan, mridangam (percussion). About the Artists:

Apart from regularly conducted workshops and lectures, she continues to train students world-wide. Sarojini has been widely interviewed by several international television and radio networks. Even several senior level performing artists in the field of Carnatic music seek her expert guidance. Leelaa Rammohan Rao Rao, daughter and disciple of Sarojini Sundaresan began her training at just 3 years old and could sing difficult compositions by age 5. Rao is also a well-known exponent of Bharatnatyam, classical dance of India. Rao continues to perform, compose and teach both music and dance. 7:30 PM Othello
The University of West Florida Department of Theatre will present William Shakespeare's Othello. The event will be held on October 18, 19, 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. and October 20 and 27 at 2:30 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82 on the Pensacola campus.
Shakespeare’s Othello is one of his most intimate and devastating tragedies. It is a story about society, status and the nature of the outsider – but it is also a story about the love and trust between friends, and between men and women.

Defying her father and society to follow her heart, Desdemona secretly marries Othello – a powerful general, and a Moor. Despite her father’s objections in court, Desdemona remains committed to Othello and follows him from Venice to Cyprus, where he is commissioned to serve. Iago, a junior officer and Othello’s most trusted adviser, is tormented by his lack of promotion. Despite Othello’s confidence in Iago’s honesty, Iago reveals that he is in fact hateful of Othello, and sets out to destroy Othello and Desdemona’s happiness, manipulating Othello to serve his own ends. Iago convinces Othello that his wife has been unfaithful with the up-and-coming young soldier Michael Cassio.

As Iago draws Othello and the audience into a web of half-truths, secrets, and betrayal, scandal is fueled – families and friendships destroyed – until a piece of supposed evidence of Desdemona’s infidelity, a handkerchief, tragically undoes them all. Othello commissions Iago to kill Michael Cassio, and then smothers Desdemona in her bed. When Emilia discovers Othello in the act, she confronts him and explains that it was Iago who tricked them all. Iago kills Emilia, but not before Othello has learned what has been done. Othello commits suicide, and Iago is taken into custody. The play ends before we know what ultimately happens to Iago, but we do know that a profusion of devastation has been left in his wake.

Ticket prices are $18 for adults, $14 for seniors and military, $12 for UWF faculty and staff and non-UWF students, and $7 for high school students. UWF students get in free with a valid Nautilus card. Reserved seats can be purchased for an additional fee of $2 per seat. The Computer Science Department will host Dr. Matthew Scotch on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m. in Building 4, Room 349. The UWF Community is invited to attend a colloquium hosted by the UWF Department of Computer Science and presented by Dr. Matthew Scotch, Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Assistant Direct of the Biodesign Center for Environmental Health Engineering at Arizona State University. This talk will review sequence-informed, real-time surveillance that is now recognized as an important extension to the monitoring of rapidly evolving pathogens. This includes viruses occurring naturally in the environment as well as those released through acts of bioterrorism. This presentation will discuss bioinformatics methods that utilize sequence data for surveillance of infectious disease threats. This includes approaches to examine the role of travel on the spread of infectious diseases.
UWF Pensacola Campus
4:30 PM - 5:00 PM Colloquium | Application of Epidemiological Modeling to Transportation Applications
The Computer Science Department will host Dr. Sirish Namilae on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 4:30 p.m. in Building 4, Room 349. The UWF Community is invited to attend a colloquium hosted by the UWF Department of Computer Science and presented by Dr. Sirish Namilae, Associate Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach. There is direct evidence that the congregation of people in built environments elevates the risk of infectious disease spread due to increased contacts between susceptible and infectious individuals. Pedestrian movement is integral to the evolution of contact network in high people density places but is not taken into account in conventional models. We will present an integrated computational modeling framework combining pedestrian dynamics and infection spread models, to analyze the infectious disease spread during air travel. The model can provide input to phylogeography models of global virus spread to analyze the effect of fine-scale mitigation strategies at the global scale.
