Experience UWF Downtown: Public Space, Collective Memory and Community Identity
Start Date: 11/30/2017Start Time: 5:30 PM
End Date: 11/30/2017End Time: 7:00 PM

Event Description:
Join Thursday, Nov. 30 for the second installment of the Experience UWF Downtown Lecture Series.
The town square throughout history has served as a public space for the expression of community values in built form. The forum, the cathedral, the courthouse, city hall, and the market all provide examples of the cornerstones of public life and the formation of community identity in the city. Recently, we have witnessed heated contestation of the monuments and memorials of town squares and other public spaces, including cemeteries. At issue is the purpose of memorialization and the historical value of keeping memorials with controversial origins.
This faculty panel will bring together experts on controversial memorials in Florida, neglected memorials in Pensacola cemeteries, the social meaning of memorials in civic space, and competing ethical frameworks for critically thinking about keeping or removing contested memorials in the city.
Date: Thursday, Nov. 30
Location: Museum of Commerce,201 E. Zaragoza St.
Time: Reception 5:30 p.m, Lecture 6 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and available on a first come basis.
