The Typewriter Project: The Subconscious of the City
Start Date: 1/17/2018
End Date: 2/16/2018End Time: Midnight

Event Description:
Participate in one of three installations of "The Typewriter Project: Subconscious of the City," Jan. 17 - Feb. 16.
Both inside and outside of college campuses, we tend to regard poetry as the privileged literary form for individual expression. The poet transmutes personal feelings into written verse, creating an aesthetic experience for readers by giving form to those private sentiments. In this model, poetry is a largely solitary activity. Poets write by themselves, whether in lonely garrets or sumptuous libraries, and readers absorb those poems in similar solitude. We might share a poem or read one aloud together. We might even be inspired to write a poem ourselves. Yet, such poetic responses reproduce the presumption that poetry is a private endeavor and the property of an individual author.
What happens when we treat poetry as an act of co-creation? What can we learn about who we are by writing and reading together? What kind of community can we thereby create?
To address these questions, the UWF Department of English, in partnership with the Experience UWF Downtown Lecture Series, will launch a month-long experiment in collective composition.“The Typewriter Project: The Subconscious of the City” invites the public to participate in the collaboration.
