The “On Turning 250: How Americans Should Remember Their Founding” lecture features historian Wilfred M. McClay as he reflects on how Americans should commemorate the nation’s approaching 250th anniversary. Drawing on the legacy of the American Revolution and the principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence, McClay argues that remembrance should balance an honest view of American history with gratitude for the remarkable achievement of a republic founded on ideals of liberty and equality.
The lecture explores how a mature understanding of the American past can sustain national memory, civic identity, and hope for the future. All are welcome.
